A devoted wife, mother of three, and proud grandmother of three, she is also the first lady of Freeway Gospel Empowerment Center, where she pastors alongside her husband, Senior Pastor Garrick L. Matlock. In 2006, she founded Ladies Reach, a biblically-based ministry designed to empower women and young women across denominational lines. In recognition of her leadership, she was inducted into the Trumbull County African American Achievers Association’s Hall of Fame in 2018.
With a career spanning over two decades, Denise has opened doors for countless dancers and inspired audiences across churches, schools, festivals, and organizations as a performer, choreographer, motivational speaker, judge, and advisor.
Ms. Denise Matlock is the founder, director, and instructor of Artistically U Dance Studio (AU Dance Co.), which she established in Warren, Ohio, in June 2002. In 2021, she expanded her vision by founding Aspire Dance Company, where she serves as artistic director.
Denise began her dance journey at age five and went on to train with legendary instructors such as Gregory Hines, Frank Hatchett, Mia Michaels, and Mandy Moore. A former captain of the Warren Western Reserve Freshman Cheerleading Team and majorette in the WWR marching band, she earned the Overall Outstanding Majorette award at Ashland College’s camp. She later danced professionally for AAC and founded the Rejoice Dance Ministry at HPCC.
She is certified to teach Jazz and Ballet through Dance Masters of America & Ohio Chapter 16. Under her leadership, AU Dance Competition Team has earned numerous awards at both regional and national levels, with Denise herself receiving dozens of honors for choreography, creativity, and excellence. She holds a Bachelor of Arts & Sciences degree from Kent State University.
Beyond the studio, Denise serves the Youngstown City School District as a Scholar Advocate Specialist in the Social Services Department.
